Custom Twitter Backgrounds

January 5, 2009

Did you Tweet Today? If not you are missing the boat.  Twitter is an unprecedented micro-blogging application that is taking social media and marketing to a whole new level.

For those that are familiar with Twitter, ever wondered how your fellow TwittHead ™ got that cool background on their profile?

twitter-custom-backgroundTwitter allows you to customize your background with various theme designs and color options.

Log in to your profile, then Go to Setting > Design and choose a preselected background or change your profile colors.

But what you really want to do is add a picture, a custom message and url’s to your business and blog sites.

Maximize your exposure to your followers, brand your profile and allow your followers to know more about you.

Twitter allows you to upload your own background image.  You can create a custom background graphic with  pertinent information and images you want to share with your followers.

How?  Well first you need to be able to create a web compatible graphic.  If you have a graphic design program, below are the basic design notes for your custom background.

If you do not know graphic design you can contact me to create your Twitter profile background or maybe check out the free Twitter backgrounds at twitbacks.com

  1. Set your background image to 1400 px wide and 800 px tall. (more than 50% of all monitors are set to 1024 px wide or wider, so plenty of real estate for your background)
  2. Twitter’s message box is 800 px wide allowing for a minimum of 200-400 px width on either side of the main content box.
  3. Create your left side info ‘box’ with 10 px of padding on the left and right.  I use a 260 px wide by 600 px tall box with a 3 px border.  This will give the viewer an easy to read layout.
  4. Add your title text or business slogan at the top of your box, then a few brief catch phrases or favorite quote.
  5. Add a few images that represent You Inc.  I have an additional profile picture and a nice photo of my 3 kids.
  6. Add your URL’s to your websites.
  7. Save and upload your background image as  .jpeg or .png.  Twiiter allows .gif formats, although they seem to have problems uploading. File size must be 800 kb or smaller.

Fairly simple eh?.
