Top 7 WordPress Social Media Plugins

If you want to maximize your blog for social media, you want to create an interactive experience for your viewers.

WordPress-social-media-pluginsI utilize several plugins in order to allow my viewers to vote and rate posts, see related posts, watch videos and bookmark their favorite articles and pages.  I also use administrative plugins to connect my social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and Youtube with my WordPress blog.

This allows me to cross reference posts and content to a wider audience and make relevant links between my various social media outlets.

In my opinion the following plugins are the best of the best with active support, continuing development and current updates to the latest version of WordPress (2.7).

Plugin: Sociable – download
Description: Automatically add links to your favorite social bookmarking sites on your posts, pages and in your RSS feed. You can choose from 99 different social bookmarking sites!

Plugin: Lifestream – download
Description: Lifestream displays your social feeds and photos much like you would see it on many of the social networking sites.

Plugin: Twitter Tools – download
Description: This plugin creates an integration between your WordPress blog and your Twitter account. Pull your tweets into your blog and create new tweets on blog posts and from within WordPress.

Plugin: Smart YouTube – download
Description:  Smart Youtube is a WordPress Youtube Plugin that allows you to easily insert Youtube videos in your post, comments and in RSS feed.

Plugin: Viper’s Video Quicktags – download
Description: Allows easy and XHTML valid posting of videos from various websites such as youtube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, and more. You can fully configure how the videos are displayed (width, height, colors, alignment on the page)

Plugin: Wordbook -  download

    Hm… I tried adding TwitterTools to my WordPress blog, and when I put my Twitter username and password in the settings page, I got the error message “Sorry, login failed. Error message from Twitter: This method requires authentication.” I’ll just stick with Twitter’s own widget for now: http://twitter.com/widgets/which_widget

    Hey Dan, I know a few folks had this same issue. The following steps may correct the error after upgrading WordPress to 2.7.
    * Deactivate the plugin
    * Deleted the plugin completely from the WP /plugins/ directory
    * Download the latest version from http://alexking.org/projects/WordPress
    * Upload the plugin
    * Enable the plugin

    Gr8 info here about 7 plugins but I’m also having same problem as Dan. I tried way you explained and also search online, but it still giving me same error message.

    It would be gr8 if I could get any guidance from you. Pls help and thanks in advance.

I’m looking for something that would allow me to put nice large social media buttons in the sidebar, but can’t seem to find anything with enough button options and a really nice presentation. I’d appreciate feedback (though I recognize this post is pretty old…)
